I left my 6 figures job to become an unnamed yogi
The people around me think that I am foolish for leaving a job that paid me a monthly salary of 150,000 rupees but little do they know that I have bigger goals than having a well-paying job.
It all started with a YouTube channel, I created that channel in my name because at that time, I loved my name. It was unique and had a special meaning to me. I wanted my name to be spread across the world while I help the people to be better in their lives. But, when you study spirituality, you also need to incorporate those learnings in your life otherwise, it’s similar to an article about your favorite celebrity you have just read. And what does spirituality teach you? To be rid of your Ego and be more Conscious. People also use terms like awakened or reborn, but I like to keep my teachings the least mystical as possible.
What is Ego, though?
Is it just me being a male thinking of myself as being superior to females, or a human superior to animal, or someone who holds a position of power and control? In reality, if you put any adjective in front of ‘I’, it becomes a part of your Ego. You don’t agree? Think this way – when you talk about someone who has two different personalities, you call it ‘alter ego’. So, ego is indeed your personality. I am fat, I am lazy, I am unhealthy, I am a man, I am weak, I am not so smart, I lack confidence. Whatever you put in front of your ‘I’, is your ego because it’s a limitation to your unlimited capabilities which you hold within yourself. I am a hard-core non-vegetarian, I said to someone 4 years ago. Now, I am a vegan who is also healthy and fit. I have stopped myself from limiting my own capabilities and hence, I have also shred myself of my name.
Who is a Yogi?
Yog means ‘to unite’. I am becoming a Yogi by freeing myself from my ego and then, uniting whatever there is left to unite with. Nature, sure! People who are underprivileged, absolutely! People who are seeking the truth, why not! I am not my body, my identity, the name that I am called by, the relations I have developed with other bodies through my own. Whatever that is left is consciousness alone. It allows me to watch over every insect passing by before I take my next step, it allows me to think of justice in it’s true sense. For example – if someone is killed by murder, hanging the other person is not justice. What will happen to that person’s dependents? So, the accused shall be put to work according to his skill and capability so hard that he can pay for the expenses of the victim’s family, his own dependents, the state’s cost of keeping him alive etc.
Why I left my job?
If I work in a 9 to 6 job, I substantially limit my capabilities to help others. I can help the business grow, my colleagues to be a better employee or a person generally, my juniors to get the right work-life balance and outside the work, I can continue working on my videos and get marginal views. Alternatively, I can read more books and put out more content in the forms of short videos, long videos, blogposts, memes etc. and all of this will have the potential to reach millions. The money that I will be earning from it can be put back to the funnel to run more ads, reach more people and do a lot of philanthropy work. This made the choice really simple.
How will I be able to manage my expenses?
Truth is, I have bare minimum expenses. I wear the same clothes I bought 4 years ago; I only buy clothes of good material but under 600 rupees to ensure that they can be used for years, and it allows me to reduce my carbon footprint. I don’t eat out and only eat vegan which means that I also translates to low health expenses. I work out at home and does not need to pay for a gym. I have got the cheapest barefoot shoes which are comfortable, long lasting and cause little to no foot injuries. I live in a rented apartment on the outskirts of the city. It’s not something that I have started now, I made myself accustomed to this lifestyle majorly over the past 2 years. The less materialistic you are, the less stressed you will be and being less materialistic does not mean that I have no ambitions. I have the biggest of them….
